JioPhone to launch in two processor variants: Snapdragon 205 and Spreadtrum


The JioPhone touted as "India Ka smart phone" is said to be the next big thing in the Indian handset market.And Jio is targeting over 50 crore feature phone users who are still on 2G/3G connection to migrate to 4G networks at an affordable cost.

The handset was announced at Reliance Jio's AGM a few days ago. While most of the details were revealed at the time of launch, Jio did not confirm which processor the handset use, but now the information is out.

The JioPhone will come in two processor variants, one with Snapdragon 205 SoC and the other with Spreadtrum's chip. Qualcomm and Spreadtrum made the announcement on Twitter, however the latter has not revealed the chipset yet, but is most likely to be the Spreadtrum SP9920A chip which is utilized by another 4G VoLTE ready handset, Lava 4G Connect M1. It is yet to be known, which parts of the country gets which processor version.

The Snapdragon 205 Mobile Platform is designed for feature phones. It is a dual-core processor clocked at 1.1GHz and has X5 LTE modem and LTE Category 4 (downlink) with download speed of up to 150Mbps and upload speed of up to 50Mbps. The processor supports HD video streaming, up to 3MP front and rear camera, dual-SIMs, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1, FM Radio and 4G VoLTE.

The JioPhone will be offered for an “effective price of Rs. 0”, but you'll have to shell out a security deposit of Rs. 1,500, which is refundable after a period a three years. Trial sales bring August 15, followed by pre-bookings for the public on August 24. The handset can be pre-ordered from My Jio app, or from local Jio Stores. Shipping will begin in September.
